Hershey Acquires Jared DeMichiel

This afternoon the Hershey Bears signed to an AHL contract Jared DeMichiel. If you’re a college hockey fan you’ll recognize the name from the RIT Tigers which he helped during this last season’s cinderella playoff run, which was ended in the semifinals against the Wisconsin Badgers, (hope there are no hard feelings towards the two UW alum on the Bears.)

Jared is a six-foot one inch goalie from Avon, Connecticut. The RIT Athletics website says

Business major … attended Avon Old Farms Prep School … born April 16, 1985 in Torrington, Conn. … son of Gregory and Cheryl DeMichiel … has one sister, Megan … favorite NHL player is Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres … favorite hockey team is the Hartford Whalers … favorite sports moment was Kevin Dineen’s game-winning goal in the Hartford Whalers last ever home game on April 13, 1997 … professional communication for business is his favorite class at RIT … favorite food is fettucine alfredo … would like to be a successful businessman in 10 years … favorite TV show is Sportscenter … historic figure he would most like to meet is John F. Kennedy.

Well he sounds like good kid; I like his favorite sports moment in particular. Here are his career stats so far according to the USCHO.com:

He has a Twitter and a (of course now defunct) blog on the RIT website.

And, now the goalie situation in Hershey gets interesting. It looks like it will be Holtby, Sabourin, and DeMicheal, a three pair tandem like much of this last season with Holtby, Cash and Neuvirth? Grubauer will be in South Carolina (or can he/is willing to stay in the CHL?) Is Dunn staying in the NCAA? How about the invitees Nauris Enkuzens and Taylor Nelson? Does this make them have even less of a chance of being offered a contract?

I suppose time will tell. Hershey, however looks to be in good shape for the up coming season with these acquisitions.

Update: Apparently DeMichiel will be invited to Rookie Camp and will perhaps even play with the Stingrays.

Meet the New Guy: Brian Willsie

(Source: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/20/Brian_Willsie.jpg)

HEY! He’s not new! We know him! He’s a former Cap and Hershey Bear (but when they were not affiliated with the Caps, if you don’t recognize the name.) He spent the past fours years between the Kings and the Avalanche (and the AHL) and now the Caps have brought back the veteran winger for a one year, two-way contract.

He’s had a career high 2005–06 season with the Caps and then he left with the Kings for the 06-07 season and I hadn’t heard much of him after.  He had some tough years, either injured or just with low producing.

I must admit I’m excited to see Willsie back in a Bear jersey and potential in a Caps jersey. And, I hope he kind of finds that 05-06 magic again.

Willsie is 6’1″, age 32, 202 lbs and from London, Ontario. Official press release from the Caps. Career stats according to Wikipedia:

More Free Agent Frenzy:

Jeff Schultz resigned with the Caps today for 4 years/11 million. A bargain for league leader in +/-. Especially considering the last defenseman to have a 50+ was Chris Pronger during his Hart season. Not making a comparison or anything but let’s just say 11 million for Jeff Schultz isn’t anything to cry over. Upwards of 16 teams will be paying more for their THIRD best defenseman. Then again the Chronicles’ crew is highly biased.

Boyd Gordon also resigned for one year 800,000. Even though he had a rough year this last season that is a good deal in most books. Hopefully the hard-working face off specialists back will be healed and ready to go for this up coming season.

The Capitals also signed Brian Fahey and Kyle Greentree to two-way contracts.

Fahey most recently played for the Lake Erie Monsters. He had 11 goals and 25 points in 71 games. He was drafted 119th overall in 2000 by the Colorado Avalance. He is 29, six-foot one and 215 lbs defenseman from Des Plaines, Illinois. He is also a former UW Badger.

Kyle Greentree is a 26-year-old, six-foot three and 200 lb native of Victoria, British Columbia. He played for the Rockford Ice Hogs last season leading the team with 26 goals in 64 games. He played for the Alaska Fairbank Nanooks. He went undrafted (signing a contract with the Flyers instead of completing his senior year at Alaska Fairbank.)

Both are expected to play in Hershey, though I would not be surprised at all to see Greentree getting a few call ups with the Caps. Considering the Bears have just lost veterans Amadio and Giroux this is a very good signing for the Bears.

Greg Amadio did in fact sign with the Grand Rapid Griffins (perhaps you remember they were the nice folks who took Nylander off our hands for a little while.) Having played with the Griffins in ’05-’06.  The defenseman had 4 goals, 14 assists, 18 points, and 334 penalty minutes in his 2 years with the Bears.

Good bye to Mr. Amadio, I know some men in Norfolk who will miss screaming your name in the “Super Mario” voice, and who found out how many Coors Lights it takes to fill the Calder Cup.

BREAKING NEWS: Giroux to the Oilers

VIA several reports on Twitter Hershey Bears forward Alexandre Giroux has reportedly signed a one way, NHL contract, with the Edmonton Oilers for 500,000.

Giroux has been on the Bears since 2007. Alexandre was an unrestricted free agent and expected to sign in the KHL if not with the Bears.

He was apparently offered a one way contract with the Islanders also.

More to come later.

Free Agent Frenzy Day 2: a Few Goodbyes

With the ending of UFA day 2 we have two goodbyes to be saying.

First up is the Chronicles favorite defenseman, Mr. Milan Jurcina. While this is not a total surprise considering he got ”Bourque’d” earlier this season we really expected Jurcina to sign with the Caps for at least another season seeing as he seemed particularly attached to the team. However Juice signed with the Islanders this afternoon for a million for one year.

Slightly surprising seeing as Jurcina is one of our only stay at home defenseman besides Tom Poti (and now Karl Alzner) and considering I, and a few other people, think Juice would have happily signed for less than a million here we expected GM to sign him. But, what let’s not cry over spilled milk; anyways maybe he’ll get double Bourque’d, we can always have hope.

In Bears news Kyle Wilson has signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has been on the team since 2007 and has become a mainstay and fan favorite for the team. A pretty consistent player putting up about 50+ point seasons and a steady stream of stats that rarely wavered over his four years with the Bears.

Interestingly the new coach in Columbus is Scott Arniel who coached the 2008-09 Manitoba team so he is pretty familiar with the Bears from the Calder Cup finals. I personally think this is a great move for Kyle though we’ll miss him all the same.

And, of course as we already posted earlier Caps did make a signing on day 2 with Dany Sabourin, who is expected to play in Hershey.

That seems to be all the news coming out of Caps and Hershey Bear hockey today. Here is hoping to some signings of a defenseman or goalie for the Caps to come. And, lastly of course good bye and good luck to #18 and #23.

Meet the New Guy: Dany Sabourin

Dany Sabourin has signed with the Caps as reported last night by a few sources and was confirmed by the Capitals this morning. Here’s what you might like to know:

Born: September 2nd, 1980 in Val D’or, Quebec

Height/Weight: 6 foot 4 inches, 200 lbs

Last played for: Providence Bruins

Drafted: 1998, 108th overall by Calgery

His career stats according to Wikipedia:

He seems to be a perfect example of a career back up and with Cash leaving the Bears he is expected to play there with Braden Holtby this upcoming season.

BREAKING NEWS: Cash signs with Avs

(picture thanks to RMNB )

VIA Mile High Hockey (and H/T to @pinpaulaback ) Hershey Bears’ goalie Jason Bacashihua aka Cash has signed with the Colorado Avalanche.

Cash was only on the Bears for a year but he quietly had a succesful season for them. Of 22 games played he won 17 only losing 3 in regulations and 2 in shout out or over time. Cash was also a quick fan favorite (as illustrated by this hard-core fan tattoo.) It is understandable why he would want to sign else where with the current goaltending situation in Hershey; he is looking for play time and by stats he clearly deserves it. Cash had the some might say the misfortune of signing with a great team with some very good young goalies, which doesn’t mean he was a bad goalie just a goalie in a organization with a lot of depth and very good GMs. We wish him a lot of luck with Colorado.

He is expected to play in Lake Erie when he goes to the Avs (where he played the 08-09 season.)

You were here briefly but we’ll miss you #35.

Natalie R. Shares Her Experience From the Calder Cup Rally

On Tuesday the Hershey Bears held their Calder Cup rally to celebrate and share the excitement of winning their 11th Calder Cup with the fans. Neither of your Chronicles bloggers were able to attend, seeing as we live three hours away and it being a weekday, much to our extreme displeasure. However we bothered invited blog friend, Caps and Hershey Bears fan, Natalie R. (also known @JMU_CapsGirl on Twitter) to please, please, please, write us a guest post for the blog since she was able to go. Natalie being the wonderful person she is agreed. Here is her experiences (and pictures which Natalie would like to note were taken on her phone so are not of the highest quality) from the Hershey Bears Calder Cup rally all in her own words (unless there is an Editor’s Note.)

“Ain’t No Party Like A Hershey Bears Party”

Having witnessed in person the first two losses to Texas, there was no way I was going anywhere near the Giant Center for game six, but I wanted to be there for the celebration if they won.  So Tuesday I drove the three hours from my house to Hershey for the Calder Cup party.  Walking in, my first sight was of the scoreboard, still reading 0.0 time & 4-0.  They had tables all around the perimeter of the floor, two guys per table, numerically together, the whole purpose of which was to keep “Matois” (Editors Note: “Matios” is the name of the bromance of Mathieu Perreault and Francios Bouchard for those not in the know) from sitting with each other and just carrying on their bromance and ignoring the fans. Or at least that’s what I figured.

Ended up two rows back from the stage, which was perfect because I left my camera in the car, along with everything else essential – jersey, sharpie, etc, so I used my cell camera.

They showed a great highlight montage from each series, followed by John Walton’s “GM, GA & GN *insert team name*” call.  From the second round, each package was preceded by the appropriate “History Will Be Made” clip.  Walton came up to the podium and got the crowd really pumped with a “Good Morning, Good Afternoon & Good Night, Texas!” then started introducing the players.  Sean Collins was the only one still rocking a full beard. And a full beer (in a Pepsi cup.)

Giroux was pretty drunk, spraying double champagne bottles all over the crowd, which I suppose makes sense as this is the last time he’ll be partying with these guys.* I’m guessing its only a matter of which KHL club at this point. *Complete conjecture;  I have no idea where his 5 o’clock shadow will land next.

Pinner came out rocking some pretty epic facial stylings. Here is a much better picture than any I could get with my cell from Erika over at RoaRR.

Helmer’s kids joined him onstage. If y’all do not know how much his son, Cade, worships Carly, its adorable. Like straight-up hero-worship cute.

The jokester of the night was Andrew Joudrey, who came onstage in Holtby’s gear with tape over the nameplate with “JOUDREAU” written over top.  All the guys were up there in their shorts & t-shirts and Jouds was in full goalie gear and flip-flops.  He signed autographs like that most of the night, but he took the helmet off and kept leaving his table.  “I gotta pee again!”

L-R:  Matty P in a hat he probably stole off an elderly man; Jouds; Bouch; Beags; Cade, Bryan & Rylan Helmer; Kroll & Wilson

Although, now that I see where he was sitting, if I was being forced to sit between “Matois”, I’d probably want some sort of protection too. Or a video camera. You. Tube.

The last group of guys onstage were the goalies. Neuvy had his stunner shades on and was holding up his ring from last year; Cash had dollar bills tucked into the sides of his glasses.

L-R:  Cash, Neuvy, Holtby & camcorder, Eakin (responsibly not looking still drunk/hungover as befits his status as a minor *coughCarlycough*)

The very last guy on stage, though, was Chris Bourque, carrying the Calder Cup.

On the left of Braden Holtby “Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangsta” by the Geto Boys, and on the right “Riding Nerdy” by Weird Al

After they were all onstage, Doug Yingst came up to the podium and gave his speech. Mostly thank-yous to all the guys, the staff, the coaches, the families of everyone involved & the fans.  He said at one point (and I’m paraphrasing here), “I knew we were going to win yesterday, because it was June 14th.  And when you add the 6 and the 1 and the 4, you get number 11.”  A drunk guy near me said “And 11 is back-to-back #1’s! Wooooooo!” Then he just stood there stage-whispering random variations of “#1, #1, Back-to-back, #1, We’re #1, baby, Woooo!!”  He needed a mic, because that was a lot less deep and more entertaining than “Fun with Numbers and Doug Yingst”.

Bryan Helmer & Coach French thanked everyone, too. Then they dropped a bunch of balloons on the crowd, which everyone starting popping. It sounded a lot like fireworks, which was kind of cool.

Remember when I had forgotten everything in my car? Yeah, I ran out and grabbed my Miskovic jersey to get him to sign it. He had a short line, so I tried to stay cool. He was excited to sign it and took a minute to talk and decide where, how big, and what number to put when he did. “Well, sign it the number you’d want as a Capital!” When he said it was cool that I had his jersey, I mumbled something stupid about being a fan of players who had come up through the NCAA, smiled at him and fled before my mouth could say anything else stupid.  (Yes, I am really this awkward around people I think are cool.)

I waited in Pinner’s line with some friends, then hit the shorter lines for guys like Kyle Wilson (a complete sweetheart who is very polite and may have the best smile on the team) & Jay Beagle. I asked Beags if we’d see him in July at development camp and he said he was a FA (which I knew, but forgot) and he didn’t even know if the Caps were interested in re-signing him. I felt like a horrible human being. But honestly, if they don’t bring Beagle back, I will be sad.

I then started waiting in the longer lines for Matty P, Bouchard & Holtby.

Anonymous Player’s Name’s line (Editor’s Note: I thought this paragraph was too amusing to edit out so Natalie and I decided to keep the player’s name anonymous out of respect) was pretty short by that time, so I got in that one. I was standing in front of a guy & two girls who were discussing who would be a Capital so they could get those signatures. They seemed to be newer fans of the team, so I tried to help them out with who might be with DC in the next few years. (I had to tell  them to go for Alzner & Carlson!) We chatted for a few minutes until one of the girls looked at Anonymous Player’s Name, looked at the other girl, and said (paraphrasing again) “The only reason you want a picture with this guy and his autograph is because he used to be f*** buddies with your friend!” I quickly turned to the front before I died laughing. You can’t make this shit up, folks.

My friend was in line for CBo, so I just handed her my jersey. (Yep, I’m one of those people. Its called efficiency, not “cutting line”) Carlson was on the phone when I got to him, but he hung up. Kid looked a little rough. I’m guessing half of it was just being bored & tired, but I’m sure a good chunk of it was alcohol induced.

Jumped in Alzner’s line as it was fairly short. I set my jersey down so he could sign the number, but he flipped the top up to see the name plate and said “Ah, Misker!” and chuckled. Not really sure what was so funny. (I am not a dork, Karl Alzner!) I then nearly faceplanted trying to extract myself from the extra long table skirt I somehow managed to wrap my foot in. So Karl Alzner either thinks I’m a huge klutz or a major loser. Or both.

I really wanted to get Andrew Gordon’s signature, him being a good Maritime boy and the unwitting linchpin of my campaign to get my Maritimer father to be a Caps fan and not a Crosby fan, but his line was still wrapped around other lines at 9:55. So I took his picture from Alzner’s line. He is such a happy guy!

Hi!  I’m Andrew and I make Karl Alzner look like an insensitive jerk!

I gave up on Gordon and went to Neuvirth, who still seemed pretty drunk and seriously did not take his sunglasses off the entire night.  He also made the weirdest facial expressions, which is par for the course with him.

With one last longing look at Andrew Gordon’s line, I hit the Bears Den for dinner & an adult beverage with Erika from over at RoaRR & tweep Kim.

All the Bears I <3 except Gordo!  Clockwise from top, On the 6:  Pinner, SquEaks, Willy, Patty Mac, Holts, Bouch & Matty P (who apparently try to even sign next to each other)  On the 8:  Carly (thanks for signing your Caps # kid), Karlzner, Misker (ditto on the Caps #), Beags, Neuvy & CBo.

We want to thank Natalie for putting so much time and effort into doing this great guest post for us. We really appreciate her doing this for us and allowing us to live vicariously through her. Thank you very much, Natalie!

And I Need to Go On and On and On and On

We are the champions.

My friends, the Hershey Bears have won the Calder Cup tonight, (June 14th, 2010) for the second time in a row. The Bears got a shut out in the 4-0 against the Texas Stars in game six. Every goal was score by a defenseman; Patrick McNeill (two goals), Kris Kringle Karl Alzner, and Captain America John Carlson.

The Giant Center had a record-setting attendance of 11,002 as Chris Bourque hoisted the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy (for MVP of the playoffs) and our captain Brian Helmer lifted the Calder Cup with the rest of the team and their families.

That’s eleven Calder Cups in franchise history.

That is the first time a team has won back to back Cups since 1991.

This is the end of the AHL’s 74th season.

This is awesome:

And, lastly Michal Neuvirth is a pimp with 22 saves for the shut out.

One of the announcers, I was too busy celebrating to be sure which it was, begged the question “Is it too early to talk about a three peat?”

Never when you’re the Hershey Bears.

Summer Time and the Living Means We’ve Been Lazy

Sorry for the silence recently. We at the Chronicles have been very busy the past weeks but we’re back, we’ve got nothing but free time on our hands and nothing but loving attention to lavish upon the blog. So here is what we’ve missed:

The Hershey Bears are in the Calder Cup finals against the Texas Stars. I, Meghan, was at Game 1. It was fun though they lost and it took me five hours to drive there though it is only a three-hour drive.

It looks as though Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Jose Theodore, will not be coming back next season. I’m torn on this because though Jose Theodore was beyond amazing this season well Contract Year Jose and Non-Contract Year Jose maybe two different species as we’ve seen before.

Eric Fehr and Eric Belanger are in negotiations with the Capitals however Walker and Corvo will not be invited back. Can we call backsies on the Corvo trade?

Reebok Zigtech – Ovechkin from soundscape music + sounddesign on Vimeo.

While I’m still not sure why hockey players are promoting tennis shoes here is Ovie’s Zigtech commercial. He plays hockey against some bears so obviously it’s rather dry, straight forward and boring.

A translated video from a Russian parody program during the Olympics. Ovie sounds like Ringo Star.

Friend of the Blog Russian Machine Never Break continues their “Gordo’s Take” series with Hershey Bear’s Andrew Gordon.

Ted’s buying the Wizards was approved. He now owns the Verizon Center and has started a new company called Monumental Sports and Entertainment. Things are looking good in Caps Land.

Every. Single. Summer. Why Ovie? WHY?

Versteeg raps. I pretend I’m not dying a lot inside.

JR shows what is amazing about hockey players (remembering a kid who was crying in 1992 after you let him down? Heartbreaking) Milbury reminds me why I want nothing more than to punch him in the jeans.

Alexandre Giroux may sign in the KHL next year. Why maybe not a big blow the the Caps, the Bears (AND MY HEART) would suffer a good blow from it.

That seems to be all we missed… though I feel like I’m forgetting something…

Oh yeah! Congrats to the 2010 Blackhawks for winning the Stanley Cup! We like them and anyone but Philly am I right?

SO CONGRATS AGAIN NOW WATCH DRUNK PARADE PATRICK KANE SHAKE HIS ASS AT YOU. DO IT! http://kanerdance.ytmnd.com/
