Free Agent Frenzy Day 2: a Few Goodbyes

With the ending of UFA day 2 we have two goodbyes to be saying.

First up is the Chronicles favorite defenseman, Mr. Milan Jurcina. While this is not a total surprise considering he got “Bourque’d” earlier this season we really expected Jurcina to sign with the Caps for at least another season seeing as he seemed particularly attached to the team. However Juice signed with the Islanders this afternoon for a million for one year.

Slightly surprising seeing as Jurcina is one of our only stay at home defenseman besides Tom Poti (and now Karl Alzner) and considering I, and a few other people, think Juice would have happily signed for less than a million here we expected GM to sign him. But, what let’s not cry over spilled milk; anyways maybe he’ll get double Bourque’d, we can always have hope.

In Bears news Kyle Wilson has signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has been on the team since 2007 and has become a mainstay and fan favorite for the team. A pretty consistent player putting up about 50+ point seasons and a steady stream of stats that rarely wavered over his four years with the Bears.

Interestingly the new coach in Columbus is Scott Arniel who coached the 2008-09 Manitoba team so he is pretty familiar with the Bears from the Calder Cup finals. I personally think this is a great move for Kyle though we’ll miss him all the same.

And, of course as we already posted earlier Caps did make a signing on day 2 with Dany Sabourin, who is expected to play in Hershey.

That seems to be all the news coming out of Caps and Hershey Bear hockey today. Here is hoping to some signings of a defenseman or goalie for the Caps to come. And, lastly of course good bye and good luck to #18 and #23.

Ten Things: Why You, UFA Player, Should Sign with the Caps

T’was the night before Free Agent Frenzy and all through the league, all the GMs were stirring, preparing for big trades. The blank jerseys were hung by the jersey lettering stations with care, in hopes there would soon be a new name to put on there. Your bloggers were nestled all snug at their desks, visions of all the reasons free agents should sign to their team dancing in their head;

1. Our Russians know how to party.

2. Matt Bradley will organize your trash and recyclable for you. (Though he may punch you in the junk. LOVINGLY, of course.)

3. It is rumored Green hides cookies in various places around Kettler… SHHHHH it’s a secret…

4.Backstrom will babysit your kids but he’ll probably need a babysitter also.

Which is baby Nicki and which is adult Nicki? Your guess is as good at mine.

5. Mike Green and Eric Fehr have grill duty covered at cook outs!

BRAAAAAAAAAAAASH! *single tear*

6. Knuble… will probably just nap a lot but hey that will make you feel like a youngin’ again!

Pssst… Don’t stare at his eye… STOP IT!

7. Your hair will always look good… well as long as you are standing next to Varlamov.

Look at all the hair gel that hair soaks up. Hey! I think we found a solution to plugging up the oil spill… SEND THAT MAN TO THE GULF!

8. Your table manners will look amazing next to Semin’s.

9. Our team has a resident car mechanic.

10. If the cable is ever out It’s probably really funny to mess up Brooks Laich’s uber organized pantry and watch him freak out.

BONUS: You’ll also you learn new geography I mean tell me you all did not go “Where the hell is ‘Jurmala’?” Hey at least I know where Latvia is.

From my 8th grade history class: Remember ELL; Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania!

Weird and Wacky Search Terms: a Particularly Creepy Week of Search Terms

Okay here we go, wacky and weird search terms once again!

Things that make you say oh shit

How about this search term from the same week “mario lemieux played like a girl” Ohhhhh shit!  Buuuurn.

Varlamov Mullet

… Could you be sitting ANY creepier?

Staal kissing Malkin

I’d really rather not know…

Why does brooks laich shave his hair

Why would you EVER need to know WHY he does it? Does it matter? Maybe it’s just too hot down in Virginia compared to Canada. Maybe his head gets all stanky with long hair.

Mike green no shirt capitals

I never… want to speak of this again.

Milan Jurcina

Nice outfit, Juice, nice outfit. (By the way; when are you coming back, favoritest Slovak?!)

You Just Got Chris Bourque’d

Bourque’d– When you get traded or picked up on waivers by another team and then your former team trades for you or picks you up on waivers only a couple months later.

Ex. “Milan Jurcina just got Bourque’d”

THAT’S RIGHT JUICE IS BACK!

I know some Caps fans were less than pleased with this but to quote what I imagine Mike Green would say “Haters gonna hate!” (followed by “Players gotta play!”) Anna and I are ecstatic. Well first I was like WTF? but then I did a victory dance in my head (my mental victory might look like the “Safety Dance” video)

Sorry Dark Blue Jacket. I know you wanted Milan to stay but I promise I’ll take good care of him and beat off all the meanie Caps fans.

I have my favorite d-man and Slovak back:

The Midnight Madness of Slovensko VS Czech: What You Missed!

(Credit to: http://deke.me/lS)

No matter what I was going to be excited for the Slovakia v. Czech game last night. As a fouth generation Slavo-Hungarian American hockey fan the fact I was seeing one of the most medal eligable rosters for Slovakia in my short Olympic hockey life had me pratically bouncing out of my seat all day in anticipation of watching them on ice for the first time is a bit of an understatment. I was also not only going to see some favorite NHL-ers like Kopecky of the Blackhawks and Milan Jurcina, on the same team, but also some former favorite NHL-ers now playing in Europe like Richard Zednik. (And, of course I was hoping that if anyone from Czech had to dominate it would at least be Flash.)

So those the other hardy souls and I who stayed up to the start time of midnight were not disapointed wether Slovensko, Czech fan or neurtal saw was arguably the best game of the Olympics yet. It was competitive, it was evenly matched and there was an air of rivilary in between the parts of the former country Czechoslovakia.

There was also a surprising amount of fans for both teams in the stands and they were arguably louder than the fans at any of the other matches thus far. The fans whistling from the stands was a constant through out.

So while I know games like Russia v. Latvia yesterday managed to draw more than usual midnight crowd those who couldn’t say up to see the game last night you definatly missed out on some great hockey.

And, even though Slovensko lost 3-1 they played very hard. They had a LOT of good chances though they just couldn’t get the puck in the net. And, too many stupid penalties that even Slovensko’s great PK couldn’t fight off even against Czech’s faltering PP. I am encouraged by what I saw but they have to get that straightened out because Russia has addressed their PP concerns on their off day and it’s going to be a uphill fight tomorow.

For my Caps (and Blue Jackets) buddies here’s what I know you’re most interested for; Flash was surprisingly quiet. He was pretty nonexistent. I was hoping for more from him in such a big rivalry game. Jurcina seemed to have a good game and did really well on the PK.

Slovakia vs Russia is at 12:15 am on the east coast. I expect quite a few fans will be on Twitter chatting up the game despite the time slot. (I’ll try not to get in any arguements with the insane amount of Cap turned Russia fans)

And, I am BEYOND glad the Hockey Gods smiled upon my schedule and caused the “snowmagedon” to make the roof of the place I go to every week day at six thirty in the morning to be “structually unsound” giving me the whole week of prelims off so I am able to stay up for the midnight games and sleep in until the afternoon games. Best. Timing. Ever.

An Old Post Returns

So because I could not come up with an original post idea (though I do have a potential Caps look-a-likes post coming up if I have enough that aren’t lame) So I thought I would just link some stuff in the most triumphant return of: MID-WEEK BABBLINGS! (if you weren’t a reader during the off season this is something I did quite often)

The Dark Blue Jacket would like to remind his team to keep Milan. And, I hope they do unless of course the Caps would like him back.

There’s something I never needed to see… Okay maybe a little. Oy vey go to the Blackhawks offical wordpress (they are so damn fancy) for more pictures and go to here to find out what in the hell is happening in that photo.

Wonderful World of Loser Domi says goodbye to the former Leafs player I liked to refer to as  the Delicate Princess.  Keep an eye out for those darn soccer balls in Calgary.

The Blackhawks did a Ladies Man video . Quite few Cap fans said Burish pales in comparison to the Caps ladies man. I for one have no opinion because I am not allowed to have an opinion because I am a lady hockey blogger and there fore am expected to be nothing but professional and pretend I have never noticed that Burish is about as good looking as Laich because that would be wrong of me as a lady hockey blogger but it’s totally cool for a male blogger to say it.

Keep up with the Blackhawks Kane and Versteeg graced us with a duet at a recent Blackhawks charity event. I can’t even; I confess I couldn’t even watch the whole video:

The always brilliant Down Goes Brown and Bloge Salming banded together once again to make a hilarous video. The Canadian’s Olympic Welcoming Song:

General consensus amongst fans was this is the most hilarous Caps related thing we’ve ever seen on the internet. Thank you as always NHLol

And, this photo whose source I do not know is general consensus the cutest damn thing ever.

Capitals Redline Mondays came back tonight. Why I know the “mondays” isn’t actually part of the name for some reason it is stuck in my head that way. My biggest complaint? Who in the heck in this “Lou” guy during the “Forces of Hockey” segment (some prof. at the UVA apparently) and WHERE IS PROFFESOR BRADLEY?! (yes, it’s spelled with two “F”s)

Pining and Whining

I am not happy with the Capitals at the moment. I still miss Juice. I even miss Clark who I was never a fan of (And, I think it’s funny everybody is torn up about him being traded seeing as he was captain when a lot of them wanted him striped of the “C” before season). I also refuse to like Jason Chimera. I didn’t like him when I was a Jackets fan back in the day. I don’t like how he looks like Nylander.

Poor Michal Neuvirth where was that team of yours yesterday? Bad defense. Bad defense. Bad defense! Could drive a person crazy.

No one on the team really deserved the Weagle scout for that game or the one against Carolina so no one gets it.

Mike Green is the only Cap who did not make his respective Olympic team (of the Caps who were expected to be). Maybe, and this is just crazy nonsense here, but just maybe Team Canada needed a defense man who played… defense? Maybe not one who scored offense so when he’s got the stat that he’s scored more goals then even two of the Team Canada forwards well snaps to Mikey and all but you know Team Canada wants D-man.

Jeff Schultz is fifth in +/- in the entire league. Besides getting a good chuckles out of it when I say it I’d like to joke “Hey, why isn’t he on the Olympic team? He’s the best Canadian defense man!”

Apparently not everybody agrees “Team Canada needs more Bradley” but then again I’m rooting for Team Slovakia and when they get kicked out (I love you team Slovakia but lets not kid ourselves) Team Russia so I could be trying to screw with you guys.

Kudos to Seabrook and Keith for making Team Canada. You can’t break that duo up; it’s just man love.

My Leafs beat the Penguins on Saturday. Suck it Pittsburgh. Go Leafs go.

I’m not sure I can live with out the Time’s sports section which was fired this week. The whole section. I can’t deal with the Post’s section and that idiot Tarik El-Bashir in particular. I can NOT!

Neuvirth, Calrson, and Aucoin made PlanetUSA team for the AHL All star game and Giroux made the Canada team. I think the teams set up that way is very odd.

I do not like the Sharks (though I still like Joe Thorton. He’s awesomesauce)

Have a good New Years Eve, kids.
